The town of Cedar Lake, Indiana is the home first settled by pioneers in the mid-19th century and originally named West Point. The name “Cedar Lake” is actually from a nearby town that is now called Creston.
From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, Cedar Lake was a popular place for Chicagoans looking for a retreat from the city. The lake had over 50 hotels at the time and several pavilions and ballrooms that brought many well-known bands to entertain the visitors.

Cedar Lake is known for the same body of water that bears its name. The lake called Cedar Lake is the largest natural lake in Indiana and used to be knows as Lake of the Red Cedars. Today the historical society pays tribute to their roots calling the local museum by the same name.
In 1870 the town of West Point got a new Post Office and the town was renamed Cedar Lake. A strong railroad presence made it a booming community because of the good jobs provided to local residents. Later, proximity to Chicago made it an ideal resort destination because it was only 90 minutes from the big city. Because of the location and abundance of leisure activities Cedar Lake continues to be a popular vacation destination today.
The Monon Railroad started construction on the lake’s western shore in 1882 and as a result many new residents flocked to the area. Tourists who see the lake as a resort destination are also abundant. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, Cedar Lake is a popular location for Chicagoans looking for a retreat from the city. The lake at one time had over 50 hotels and several ballrooms to host well-known bands to entertain the visitors. Most noteworthy today, the Lassen Hotel and Monon Park Dancing Pavilion are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
